Per Scholas In Miami
In 2001, the Miami Dade Empowerment Trust saw a clear digital divide in South Florida and invited Per Scholas to help. The Miami Dade Empowerment Trust, by providing significant start-up money, entrusted Per Scholas to implement computer distribution and job training in Miami. Per Scholas Miami opened its doors in 2004.
Since the opening of the Miami office, Per Scholas has connected over 700 families to an ACCESS computer at the lowest possible price and trained 71 community residents to begin profitable careers as A+ Certified computer technicians. The training program has grown in popularity and there are over 150 applicants for each class that sits only 15 students.
The Miami office has been embraced by the funding community of South Florida. Per Scholas Miami has received funding support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Dade Community Foundation, Bank of America, Bank Atlantic, Colonial Bank, and gifts-in-kind from TransAtlantic Bank , Miami Dade Enterprise Community Center, and Basic Systems. In addition, Per Scholas Miami has strong partnerships with Miami Dade Transit and Dress for Success which provides direct assistance to students with transportation problems to attend class and in need of a business suit.
