Course Overview

Web development requires robust, scalable solutions to power today's interactive digital experiences. The advanced, asynchronous MERN Stack (UCI 3047) course equips you with the specialized knowledge required to develop, test, and deploy enterprise-grade websites using the industry's most in-demand programming languages and tools.

Throughout the MERN Stack (UCI 3047) program, you will gain a deep, conceptual understanding of the complete software development lifecycle. Working within a simulated integrated development environment (IDE), you will move beyond foundational HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to master the entire MERN ecosystem — MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js. In addition, you will leverage essential industry-standard technologies, including Redux and JSON Web Tokens (JWT), to ensure your applications are both highly responsive and strictly secure.

Technical Skills & Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Build comprehensive, large-scale full-stack applications from scratch using modern software engineering practices.
  • Connect dynamic front-end applications powered by React with robust back-end infrastructures utilizing Express, MongoDB, and Node.js.
  • Implement JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) to ensure highly secure user authentication and data authorization.
  • Utilize advanced React features and modern asynchronous JavaScript, including React Hooks, Async/Await, React Router 6, and Axios, to create seamless user interfaces.
  • Implement modern ECMAScript 6 (ES6) syntax within Node.js environments to write cleaner, more efficient server-side code.
  • Deploy your completed, production-ready MERN stack applications seamlessly to cloud platforms such as Heroku.
  • Apply established industry best practices for architecting and maintaining both front-end and server-side applications.
